I was pondering to myself why light moves. If a photon has not mass
and no known force pushing it then why does it move?

The speed of light is known to be 186,282,397 miles per second.

But why is it this speed and not, for example 197,527,698 mps?

Surely some force is at work which is determining the absolute speed
of light, and this force is stopping the photons exceeding said
velocities.

When I say force I do not refer to the ether which was believed to
exist but has since been proven not to, what I refer to is the unknown
reason why light propagates.

We know that a photon is a packet of energy but this energy has no
bearing on speed. If this was true then that would mean that light of
different wavelengths would travel at different speeds, which we know
is not true.

So then, we have established that no known medium is making the photon
move. But, what if the photon that we see is just a part of something
happening elsewhere?

I will try to explain this as best as I can.

We have theories at the moment that say that there are more
dimensions, perhaps 10, 11 or even 26.

What if we do not exist in any of these dimensions but all of these
dimensions form together to make our dimension which is the sum of all
the other dimensions?

If this was correct light would have its own dimension in which
different rules of physics apply and because of this we are only
seeing the resulting photon from said dimension.

Because this photon originates and infact exists in the other
dimension then not only does light propagate itself using rules from
that dimension there is much more than meets the eye behind the
propagation of the photon.

The reason that we can not work out why exactly a photon moves is
because we can not, at this point in time, find this other dimension.

This may sound like a bunch of rubish but if anyone cares to read
through it and say what they think to this theory I would greatly
apreciate it.

Hello Joshua...

Take a look at:http://www.dualspace.net.

The author has taken your concept in a different direction. He asked the
question, why do mu and epsilon have the values that they do (combined,
they
define c) and why should they have ANY value since the vacuum supposedly
has
nothin in it. So, he hypthesized another universe defined by the mu &
epsilon values. (Gross simplification and probably putting words in his
mouth!)

See... other people think -- as you said -- "rubish" too!

Thank you Bill, That website is very informative and it will take me
quite a while to get through it.

Hello, again, Joshua...

As long as we are considering the "unknowable," you may be interested in

Dr. Little's Theory of Elementary waves is yet another attempt to explain
why light sometimes acts as a wave, and sometimes as a particle. In his
theory, he assumes a reverse quantum wave for every forward wave.
Interestingly, his theory appears to explain the infamous, anomalous doeuble
slit experiment.

There are some "bugs" in his theory -- mainly how to explain quantum waves
that originate light years away. That may be why he seems "stuck" on chapter
2 of his book.

I have a VERY POORLY DEVELOPED alternate idea. (made public here for the
first -- and probably last -- time.) Instead of waves that are paired with
source waves to "guide" them where they are "supposed" to go, I think that
the universe is full of (energy?) waves that occupy all space and all
possible paths. These waves are of equal amplitude and all fequencies, but
since they are going in all directions (bouncing off matter as they go)
their relative phases are never additive and the net effect is zero.

With this idea, all possible paths have Guiding waves present. Thus, when
energy -- like a light beam -- is emitted, it has a path to follow (a la
Little).

This idea would be consistent with some concepts of vacuum energy that
consists of "seething" masses of energy.

Think also of charging up a short length of open ended coax cable from a
battery. The charging energy travels to the end, & "bounces" back. If,
before the slug of energy "reflects" back to the source, we disconnect the
battery, what happens? We *measure* a DC voltage in the cable. But I
maintain that the slug of energy continues to bounce back and forth forever.
(This idea actually has some precedent.)

There is more, but the fellows with white jackets have arrived. Besides,
Shady Acres is nice this time of year!
