how to measure the fluctuations in the intensity of a light ray?

Hi there,

Could you also tell me how can I detect if there are fluctuations in
the intensity of a light ray? These fluctuations can appear at very
small intervals of
time (nano seconds or even smaller (pico)). I need a device which can
notify me about these occurances.

What devices are for measuring the fluctuations in the intensity of
light? Please note that
these fluctuations appear very fast (maybe a have a fluctuation at
10^-10 s and another fluctuation appears at the moment 2*10^-10).

I'm not interested in additional information about the fluctuation. I'm
just interested if the fluctuation occured or not.

Thanks,
Laura
