WHere does the Optical communications industry stand on Solitons?

Before the crash, Solitons were discussed as a means of ultra long haul
without repeaters. Especially for submarine systems.

Can anyone recommend a good resourse to read up on the near latest on
where folks are going with Soliton technology?
