Warship cost inflation.

There was an article on this in an issue of Warship I remember reading.
Broadly speaking it made the point that technical progress increased
ship cost far faster than available funds. As a result the number of
ships a major navy has dropped in more or less a straight line since
ancient times allowing for blips during major wars.
Another problem is manning bigger ships need more people and wage costs
increased faster than inflation.
I doubt hat it possible for any navy n the present age to meet a two
power standard while the RN in 1801 actually met a three power standard.
IIRC the RN abandoned the two power standard by 1890 substituting a 70%
advantage over the next biggest fleet as a target. A target that was
never reached IIRC.
I would think that this applies to most weapons with unit cost of
modern artillery for example being higher than adjusted inflation
compared with WW2 weapons.
