I Hestitate To Post This, But...

....I'm going in for repairs next week (the 20th). Unlike Mr. Breen,
they aren't going to be tinkering with any vital organs intentionally.
This will be a laparoscopic repair of a rather large [1] surgical hernia
that sprang up after I had my distal pancreatectomy back in 2007. It
has been unable to be repaired until now because the cancer [2] drugs I
was on for the first two different sets of therapies (both clinical
trials which included VEGF-A inhibitors) precluded non-emergent surgery.
The drug I am on now [3] is an mTOR inhibitor and does not preclude
surgery.

I'm told this is booked as an outpatient surgery, but that about 50% of
patients actually end up staying overnight (and that my chances are good
for that because of the size of the hernia).

[1] To give you an idea of how large the incision for the operation
was... <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hepatectomy>

"Access is accomplished by laparotomy, typically by a bilateral
subcostal ("chevron") incision, possibly with midline extension (Calne
or "Mercedes-Benz" incision)."

I had the Calne variation. The chevron goes from flank to flank while
the upright (which completes the "Mercedes" part [4]) extends up the
sternum several inches.

[2] I have liver metastatic neuroendocrine pancreatic tumors. This is
the same disease that killed Mr. Jobs.

[3] Which seems to be working well.

[4] I joke that, if I buy a new car, it will have to be a Mercedes-Benz
because I've already been branded with the logo. Roy Calne himself is
the one who called it the Mercedes incision.
