Ship's dog - or at least U-boat's dog

I recently came across a story of a dog, a mascot on a U-boat, that
was taken over by the RN ship which had sunk the U-boat and captured
some of it's crew - presumably including the hound. Lord knows how
one kept a dog aboard a U-boat but I suppose it has been done.
Details were incredibly sketchy, however there is reason to believe
the dog had been presented to the U-boat by a high-ranking Nazi
official's wife. So does anyone know of this mutt which switched
allegiance from the Kriegsmarine to the RN and do they have any
details? A wide guess might be that it was not even off a U-boat,
just some German ship. A picture would also be nice. It was
apparently widely reported in the British press at the time. Sorry
cannot be more specific - Google has not been very helpful either.
