The 8" was listing, leaking, making smoke and running away by then...
He was facing two 6" light cruisers, one of which had two turrets jammed.
His fuel plant was critically damaged, he wasn't going home in that ship and he knew it.
So why didn't he fight?
He could have sunk or critically damaged both light cruisers but he didn't, why not?
Nobody cares.Which is what he got paid for.He was no mercenary. He took his own life while having dole on his
savings account.
If an RN captain had done that they'd still be cursing his name.

Langsdorf didn't know the true extent of damage nor if help for Harwood was near.
He'd done his duty to Germany, he chose to save his crew over his ego.
His suicide wasn't to avoid disgrace as much as to show he wasn't afraid of death.
Both his and the enemy's ships were afloat and capable of continuing the fight.
He most certainly did not do his duty.

So I looked at the script
It was six weeks filming in the desert.
No girls, no dialogue, just guys with guns.
They said "Do you want wages or a percentage?"
It looked like a certain turkey.
When they came the second time I was ready.
I haven't had to work since...
Eli Wallach on his roles in
"The Magnificent Seven"
and "The Good the Bad and The Ugly
