AFAICT the Rubis are conceived as escort/patrol for the more or less
easily predictable routes to base of les SNLE (look up the losses of
U-boats in the Bay of Biscay and generally near their bases during
WWII),
so carrying 4 18 weapons, I guess, is more than enough.
Indeed but the proposed use for a German SSN was for a machine
suitable for prolonged distant deployment.
True, the Rubis is a fascinating vessel.
Forgive me if I am totally wrong, but was the Rubis mission sort of a
pre-AIP AIP? A small boat, limited range, but nuclear boat capability
as far as speed and performance?
Essentially yes
I don't want to get off on that tangent, though. The German SSN idea
was just based in the idea that more pan-European or global missions
might come up, and if Germany is going to go along a SSN or two would
be very useful for them.
Again we have the question of what the mission would be that requires an
SSN.
Of course the boats would be an extension of
policy, and if their policy wouldn't entail such requirements theit
current submarines are certainly excellent for the existing ones.
The other big issue is the anti-nuclear lobby in Germany. It is VERY
strong , to the extent of being able to persuade the parliament to pass
laws phasing out nuclear power (at a time when other nations are expanding
nuclear power again). In this political climate I think building SSN's is
a non starter
