Police probe gun show after boy killed by Uzi
Mon Oct 27, 2008 1:55pm EDT

BOSTON (Reuters) - Authorities in Massachusetts are investigating a gun
fair where an 8-year-old boy died after accidentally shooting himself
in
the head with an Uzi submachine gun while under adult supervision,
police said on Monday.

Christopher Bizilj lost control of the weapon on Sunday at the Machine
Gun Shoot & Firearms Expo at a sportsman's club in Westfield, a city
about 96 miles west of the state capital Boston, police said.

He was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Republican gun nuts were unrepentant

Long-time club member state Rep. Donald F. Humason, R-Westfield,
attended the event Sunday but had left before the Bizilj was shot.

"This is a terrible tragedy," Humason said. "It was a tragedy not
through the negligence of the instructors or the club. Everything was
done under the supervision of licensed instructors."

Asked about allowing youngsters to fire machine guns, Humason said, "If
we don't teach kids how to use dangerous things they will find them and
use them the wrong way. No amount of legislation will stop accidents
from
happening."http://www.masslive.com/news/index.ssf/2008/10/westfield_police_relea...

This article didn't say whether the shooting took place outside or
inside a building. I have seen TV news video showing a small building
as the club hq and that the kid was supposed to shoot at a pumpkin. I
still wonder what drunken adult decided the kid could handle the
recoil.

The article says 'a licensed instructor'.

I wonder what you need to get a license?

I wouldn't consider it good practice to give any child a weapon that shoots
a full power pistol cartridge without some sort of sub calibre training,
and I'd be very wary of giving any child ( a person under 16) any sort of
short 'pistol type' weapon. It's far too easy for them to forget what
they've got in their hand and turn around while it's loaded.

I now expect a series of posts from the sort of half-wit who says stuff like
"I taught my five year old daughter to shoot .44 magnum and she can hit a
fly's eye with it at 100 yards every time and she'd never done anything
stupid and never will."

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Barbeques on fire by the chalets past the castle headland
I watched the gift shops glitter in the darkness off the Newborough gate
All these moments will be lost in time, like icecream on the beach
Time for tea.
