So the question to the group is...

Should we rethink how we elect a commander in chief?

I think that the issue in general isn't the Commander in Chief, but
the President as top of the Command Chain.
Because the first US
president was an excellent general and the then-worldwide standard of
the chief of State being also the Leader in war, the US President has
more voice in military decision-making process, instead of a formal
role, or a delegate or shared role.

One must keep in mind that War is a "special state" of the countries,
and the right (in juridic sense) reckon this; in the "normal state" of
the countries, e.g. peace, the political affairs involve, at least
theoretically, the administration, decision-making and legislative
process, geared towards the improving & well being of the countries
and their citizens. in War, special state, the political affairs are
geared toward the winning the war and managing & organizing resources
available
toward this objective.

I don't want to wrote a political science (whose is what degree is my
"Dott." ) treatise, so I guess that what I have pointed above is the
core, pure political science, non-partisan & universal aspect of the
issue.

Well, it's not about choosing a commander-in-chief, it's about
choosing a President, regardless of his role in war. Selecting the
leader of the most powerful nation in the world has gotten to be such a
mess that some highly qualified people won't run.
