Could an enlarged version of Stiletto do a better job in the LCS role
than the other 2 designs?

mmm.... seems a good idea; ISTR to have pointed in another thread that the base concept of early DD (that is, 200-350 tons, light but powerful armament, and high speed) is perhaps the best response against pirate & "evil guys" speedboat menace (conceptually not dissimilar to victorian TB)

But the entire issue IMHO is around to the failure of US military & procurement to grasp the KISS concept.

a simple monohull with 1-2 57/70 plus between 4 and 7 junk bashers in the .50-35mm range and an handiful of light antiship missiles (like the Italian Marte or britsh Sea Skua or even smaller) in good' ol rack launcher and a speed in the 32-40 kts under or around 400 tons is IMHO feasible, and can be build & fitted with a very low price tag, even accounting for inevitable (in the US) sheniganings & pork barreling.

I understand that I have left out the ASW, but IMHO this is better covered by helos; perhaps this can be a good idea taking a new look to the original USS Hayler (DD 997, the last sprucan) design (enlarged hangar & flight deck for carrying four helos); the old Italian Cruisers was excellent ASW platforms because of the large helo wing

BTW helos are also excellent platforms against speedboats, and also capable of many useful missions....

And there's also the drones, and I guess that we see back the cats amidship the surface combatants :D (serously, someone has noticed the resurfacing of old architecture in DDs & euro FFs ? the Kongos has back the old pagodas, the FREMM & Daring shows large mast reminescent of tetrapodes, and seems that the new Rinascimento frigates seems to have tronco-conic masts very similiar to later Condottieri's bridges/conning tower.....)

Best regards from Italy,
Dott. Piergiorgio.
