Actually, less than half of it. It's the 49th parallel that is the
border
from Manitoba to the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Now, if we had stuck with "54'40" or Fight!" the debate would be quite
different!

Would LaN be living in the Northern Reaches of King County, WA?

TMO

Whatcom County, please. And that fiction about the 49th does not
include the United States portion of Vancouver Island. The 49th runs
about 50 miles North of the San Juan de Fuca and the Gerry Kaiser took
our "Victoria" away from us.

All a little garbled. Vancouver's Island was never in the negotiations to
be American leading to the Oregon Treaty 1846. However, a dispute did arise
after that over San Juan Island as to where the border would be in the Gulf
Islands. (ie East or West of that island, since the Treaty "assumed" there
was just one strait between Vancouver's Island and the Mainland) The
subsequent Boundary Commission took years to decide the details.

54 40 was originally the agreed boundary between the Hudson's Bay Company
and the Russian American Fur company (sp?) for collecting furs. The
Russians had a farm in California--agreement with Spain/Mexico) to provide
food for their trappers up north where gardening not so good. HBC did a
deal with the Russians to supply them with food from HBC's farms (mostly on
the Columbia River and in Puget Sound) so the Russians were able to abandon
their California base, and HBC was allowed to collect furs to 54-40

Spain/Mexico had south of 42N so the land between 42 and 54 40 was shared
British /American under various deals and war- threats of war got things
sorted out. Essentially, the Americans (having grabbed California from
Mexico) grabbed the HBC farms in Oregon, including at Puget Sound and the
HBC retreated to their 'core area' Vancouver's Island and north of the 49th
on the Mainland, since the British government declined to get in a war to
help the HBC. Later, the US split their Oregon and created Washington

The Alaska Purchase used this same boundary for where Alaska was wrt British
lands, after the US decided (after some debate) not to just grab British
Columbia at the same time after the Civil War. BC eventually joined Canada
after that. This did not mean it was over. Later, the Americans grabbed
the Alaskan Panhandle from BC, but incursions across the 49th into eastern
BC (even to the pre WW1 period ) were rebuffed successfully.

Note: using the possessive for the geographical names Hudson's Bay and
Vancouver's Island etc has been dropped, but the Hudson's Bay Company
retains the original useage in its name

Regards,
Barry
