Re: U.S. soldiers: Heroes or Dupes?

Sean, there's nothing wrong with asking questions, but I think you're wrong about it. The
Vietnam analogy to Iraq is not correct. Several things to point out: 1) There is no NVA
equivalent waiting in Syria or Iran to jump in once the U.S. leaves. 2) You're lumping all
Iraqis under the anti-American banner. The Kurds sure don't want us to leave. And the
Shia who don't like the Iranians, or their puppets (Sadr and his thugs-and many of them
are thugs cloaked in the name of religion) feel the same way. And in the ultimate irony, the
Sunnis who haven't left want the U.S. to stay to keep the Kurds and Shia from removing the
Sunnis from the country-in the traditional local manner (extermination or forced relocation).
3) There is no major power supporting the insurgents, who btw, are of many stripes: AQ,
other jihadis not connected to AQ, Saddam loyalists, Sadr's bully-boys, etc, unless you
count Iran. 4) Most Iraqis want democracy, even if it's a bit authoritarian. Few want any sort
of either secular dictatorship (Saddam's loyalists want this), or religious dictatorship (either
Sunni-AQ's goal, or Shia-what Sadr and his Iranian paymasters want). 5) As long as the U.S.
has strategic interests in the Middle East, U.S. forces will be in the neighborhood. And if the
mad mullahs in Tehran do get a nuke, these zealots will be reminded that for a Trident-II
SSBN, delivery will be in 30 minutes, if they're crazy enough to launch one or give one to
Hezbollah or Hamas to use. Even the two Democraps still running admit that U.S. forces will
still be in the region, even after any Iraq drawdown, even if they have to appeal to their loony
left (Moveon.org, Code Pink, etc) base to get the nomination.
