Where my OCS class went bananas was the aviator assigned to get "deep
draft" experience on an AP or AO and treating it like an entrance exam
to join a drinking club. Jgs sweating arrivals while the "CO" was
drinking coffee and talking on the port radio with one of his friends.
Later great elation when the aviator's CV went aground on an
"uncharted reef" inside Subic Bay.
Naval aviators who get deep draft commands have never had much of a
reputation as shiphandlers. I assume though, that Captain Ted Branch,
NIMITZ's CO during the deployment which was the subject of this series,
avoided trouble as he later attained flag rank:
