Vince has argued that Mitsuo Fuchida, riding in a B5N Kate
aircraft,
could not have found Oahu and therefore Pearl Harbor by using the
radio beacon of station KGMB 1320 KHz from Honolulu.

Lindberg using more primative intruments managed to find paris
flying
from
new york.

Difference in size, Europe 8.8 million square miles and by heading
east impossible to miss. Oahu 400 square miles, covered with clouds
and Fuchida wanted to avoid detection.

No discussion of aircraft compass capability c. 1941. I might
suggest anyone with access to Most Probable Position: A History of
Aerial Navigation to 1941 by Monte Duane Wright comment. One review
seems to suggest the metal of the aircraft could influence a magnetic
compass.

he wasn't aimed at "europe" he was heading for paris.
a trip due east would have made him landfall in portugal..
and he had to get their with fuel., a trip due east might have had a wet
ending.

He flew great circle, wing in ground effect, had points along the way
in Newfoundland and Ireland to line him up. Still very hard to hit any
part of Europe where you would get wet.

before all he had to do was "head east" now its the great circle route.,
make up your mind.
maybe its because like fuchida he knew how to navigate and use his
intruments.
