It would appear that much of the command structure of Sydney was
killed early in the fight, after the Sydney steered close enough to
Kormoran as to render the Sydney's main armament useless.

That is a non-existant situation, and one that your reference
does not suggest.
(K was a taller ship than S. S's turrets were capable of 5
degrees depression.)
