Good point. So couldn't Boeing had tendered a more modern plane like
the Dreamliner or the good old 747 both of which have a good
production run for the civil market. This would make the unit cost
lower and the supply of parts very secure.
The 747 is a 40 year old design being phased out of service worlwide.
Not a good basis for a new tanker design.
So, how precisely is being a 40 year old design not a good basis?
Higher maintenance costs, poorer fuel efficiency for starters
(Especially since precious little of the aircraft is actually 40 years
old in design.) Being a '40 years old design' is an argument a
fashionista or spoiled supermodel makes - 'will it do the job' is the
question you ask when considering purchasing a new build aircraft.
(Insofar as being 'phased out worldwide' - Boeing would be surprised
to learn that. Their order books for the new model are bulging at the
seams.)
Not exactly. Deliveries have been in decline since 1990 and only 16
were supplied to customers last year while significant numbers of
customers are replacing them with aircraft like the 777 and Airbus 330.
68 Airbus A330 aircraft were delivered in 2007 along with 1 A340's
while Boeing delivered 141 777's
