Good point. So couldn't Boeing had tendered a more modern plane like
the Dreamliner or the good old 747 both of which have a good
production run for the civil market. This would make the unit cost
lower and the supply of parts very secure.
The 747 is a 40 year old design being phased out of service worlwide.
Not a good basis for a new tanker design.
So, how precisely is being a 40 year old design not a good basis?
(Especially since precious little of the aircraft is actually 40 years
old in design.) Being a '40 years old design' is an argument a
fashionista or spoiled supermodel makes - 'will it do the job' is the
question you ask when considering purchasing a new build aircraft.
(Insofar as being 'phased out worldwide' - Boeing would be surprised
to learn that. Their order books for the new model are bulging at the
seams.)
