Greenlawn teen who tried to stay underwater dies

Marc William Dawson had yet to ship off to the Navy when he died from
pushing himself to be among the elite.

Dawson, 17, of Greenlawn, never recovered after passing out under water last
week as he practiced holding his breath in a Huntington YMCA pool.

He was set to ship out in September and hoped to qualify to train as a Navy
SEAL, his sister-in-law, Mariel Dawson, said last night. "He wanted to wear
that suit and come home and be a proud soldier," Dawson from his wake.

The Harborfields High School senior had been submerged for about two minutes
on Feb. 18 when fellow lifeguards spotted him face down in the pool, said
Det. Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick of Suffolk's homicide squad. He had vomited into
the water.

Investigators have ruled the drowning an accident, and they do not suspect
any foul play, Fitzpatrick said.

Dawson had been on duty as a lifeguard at the Y the day he drowned around
6:15 p.m., but he had gone on a break when he went under water to hold his
breath, Fitzpatrick said. After about two minutes, Dawson signaled fellow
lifeguards on duty.

"They check on him, and he waves to them and points to his watch,"
Fitzpatrick said.

Moments later, Fitzpatrick said, "he's unconscious under the water face
down." Other lifeguards tried to resuscitate him by administering CPR.
Dawson died a week later, on Monday, at Long Island Jewish Medical Center,
police said.

An executive director at the Huntington YMCA, Eileen Knauer, said the death
is a time of "sadness and grieving."

Mariel Dawson, of Glen Cove, said she'll always remember her brother-in-law.
The swimmer. The basketball player. The charismatic boy who loved dancing of
all sorts -- break dancing, hip hop, reggaeton.

She said her brother-in-law dreamed of life in the SEALs.

Only a few thousand men nationwide serve in the SEALs, a Navy unit that
learns to arrive at targets via aircraft, land or submarine during grueling
training that peaks during so-called Hell Week, when candidates are allowed
to sleep less than five total hours over the course of 5 1/2 days.

A potential recruit for the SEALS must pass a rigorous screening test,
including push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups and a host of aquatic requirements,
according to a Navy recruiting Web site.

"He wanted to be very much involved," Dawson said. "He wanted to save
lives."

And even in death, Marc Dawson got his wish.

In the days after the family donated his organs, five patients' lives have
been changed, she said.

"His heart was given to a man who had four hours left to live," Mariel
Dawson said.

Dawson's family will celebrate a funeral Mass today at 10 a.m. at Our Lady
Queen of Martyrs Roman Catholic church in Centerport, with entombment to
follow at St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale. He is survived by his parents
and four brothers.

It is sad, but it was also unwise.  The SEALs have a website, they
tell you how to prepare for the placement test.  There is nothing that
requires you to hold your breath over two minutes.  It is like a guy
dying from trying to free fall to 100 ft. where that is no requirement
from anyone in their right mind.  SEALs are bold and tough, but they
don't want stupid.  Sorry if this sounds mean but it is an example of
Military Darwinism.

That's the idiot military, though/ Since there are many
requirements
to hold you tanks underwater for two minutes. The idiot Navy just
never says which tank, until you step on one.
