If you think nobody cares you're alive,

An earlier post criticized another poster for placing undue importance
over an op-ed published in an obscure paper. The comment was an
average American doesn't know much about what is going on outside a 10
mile radius of his local rag***. My addendum to this attribution of
general ignorance among an average American is that's why the US is
stumbling so badly these troubled times. You guys haven't a clue as
to what is going on in the world.

When the US had most of the world's wealth and could do anything she
wanted in the international scene this ignorance and lack of interest
in world affairs didn't matter. But now you have a public debt that
will take at least three to four generations to pay off. Your proud
military machine is good only for delivering a sucker punch but quite
unable to sustain a campaign. You have already realized that
delivering a sucker punch only gets you stuck in a bottomless quagmire
if you cannot follow through with its aftermath. It is obvious you no
longer have the means to solve your problems or to determine the
direction of world affairs any more. Just pick any two inches of
subject headings in this newsgroup and you'll find some very eloquent
pieces on how fucked up the US is.

Thus more than ever you are forced to pay attention to global affairs
if for no other reason than your country America has inserted herself
into many affairs around the world. They all have blowbacks. This
is a naval and military group. You should have grown up enough by now
to realize that the military does no exist by itself or for itself.
It exists to carry out your country's political objectives. Political
objectives means you have to know what you bare fighting for.

To put it crudely what you are fighting for is oil security. My
posting of articles from Asia Times Online is to wise you up about the
the strategic oil plays in Central Asia, Russia, Iran and in Africa
that are going on right infront of you. These mega projects seldom
get reported in the West because the US and the EU have not succeeded
in getting a piece of the action. Neither has India. Your freedom of
action is pinned down in Iraq and Afghanistan. There's a lot more
going on but I'll move to the next point.

China is the only country that can challenge US hegemony. It only
stands to reason that you should be aware of what is going on in
China. The pundits say China will catch up with and maybe even exceed
the US economy and global influence by 2030 or 2050. The date doesn't
really matter and the crossover event is accepted as a given these
days. I do sense a desperate optimism in you that the US will always
be ahead in weapons technology. I won't challenge you on that as it
is unecessary. Do look up these websites maintained by US experts
whose professional jobs require (hopefully, since neocon authors
contribute too) objective and accurate assessments of the China threat
(military, political and economic.)
http://www.comw.org/cmp/index.html (position papers)
http://www.sinodefence.com/default.asp (weapons hardware)

I post articles on China and on other events of interest that won't
appear in western media. I don't expect you to change your mind on
any subject any time soon. But you do read them. Sic, my netname is
remembered by you and an abject of your sneer. No matter. I score.
You read what I wanted you to read regardless of whether you agree
with it or not. It is unavoidable that some of the arguments and data
from those articles will stick in your mind. That's all I seek.

I shall be posting separately a recent UPI interview with Singapore's
Lee Kuan Yew. Read it closely and reread it. Mr. Lee has many keen
insights into the state of world affairs today that you should give
some thousght to. I won't comment on Mr. Lee's interview at this
stage and let you form your own opinions. I hope all of you will add
your comments.
