Way back about 20 years ago, I was working in and R&D lab. I used
picric acid to make derivatives. The stuff is typically stored in
bottles "wet". That is, the water was good at preventing the crystals
from detonating upon any friction or pressure application. And yes, it
is a darned goo dye, turns everything yellow!
Anyhow, we had a 10 lb bottle that had apparently dried out. We called
in our "Safety" person who decided to destroy it by taking out back in a
field and shooting it.
As I understand it, the stuff is quite soluble in sodium hydroxide and
water. Then you just pour it down the drain. It's not especially toxic
and will break down quickly.
