Nothing different from any other day. 109 was very stable and gentle
plane in landing pattern.
The reference is probably down the known weakness in the landing gear.
In addition the narrow track of the gear made manoeuvring them on the
ground difficult. Not good traits in carrier aircraft.
Given the well known problems deck handling Seafires with their narrow track
outward folding gear . . .
In this respect, it is worth noting that for all their experience the
British were not fully succesfull in "navalizing" the Spitfire. In
fact, I can't think of a single instance of anyone successfully
navalizing an a/c designed for land based use.
Pup,
1 & 1/2 strutter
Camel
Nimrod
Sea Mosquito
Sea Hornet
Sea Fury
Sea Hawk
Sea Venom
arguably Sea Vixen / DH110
Sea Harrier
strangely all from the Tom Sopwith/DeHavilland stable...
thats my first shot at purely british ones, in about 30 secs...
Note that, one, half of your examples come from after 1940,
and the pre 1940 planes were all ones where landing speeds
and airborne speeds were low, making free launches and
landings from a carrier easy.
Neither point applies to a BF-109 on a carrier. Plus, the
Germans, unlike the RN, *had never done any of this
before*.
Even the well experienced Brits, didn't do that well with a
navalised narrrow undercart fighter: Spit/Seafire...
I doubt the Germans
were going to get it right first time out of the box. They are not
going to know what doesn't work until they test it at sea.
Even assuming they finished the GZ they would still be years
away from having an oeprational air group.
Yep.
