Unless you're talking about "large projects" like the Gulag Archipelago ... just what are you on about here? What large
feats of engineering have Communists ever come up with to rival
the TVA or the Chunnel or the Panama Canal or the USS Nimitz?
The only one that springs to mind is the Aswan Dam, which is kind
of a famous engineering *disaster*.
its an engineering success, its an ecological disaster.

The pharoahs had unlimited slave labor, and they did much better,
all those thousands of years ago.
The builders of the pyramids were not slaves. (lots of evidence
based on small number of guards to workforce. they were either
artisan specialists or agricultural labor recruited during the
flooding season

As for the "idealism" thing, well, there's a difference between vicious zealotry and idealism.
???

Where do you put "chirstians" Does it depend on whether they are
burning infidels or not?

egypt was always on the verge of starvation. one year of low floods
and famine breaks out. such a society does not seek out slaves as
they are extra mouths to feed. the pyramids are a classic example
of make work. they had plenty of excess labor and they needed
something for them to do.

Pharonic Egypt exported food
It was the granary for Rome
