Lots of U-boat guys were captured after their boats were sunk.
Such cases were extremely rare - right out at the end of the bell

There were about five thousand survivors of sunken U-boats. Since 28
000 died, well, that is a strange looking curve. We captured two
German subs. Since all the sunken U-boats had no survivors, the five
thousand U-boat sailors who were captured must have been on two boats.
Must have been crowded.
Sure, in some fantasy world where any significant number of U-boat
crewmen escaped in the same manner as the crew of Tang.
Here in the real world, the vast majority of U-boat survivors (99%+)
escaped from their boat _on the surface_, with the boat subsequently
sinking unmanned. They did not escape from sunken boats.
