IMO this is too much of 20/20 hindsight. Remember nobody then knew what it
would take for the Japanese to surrender.
OTOH, _everyone_ knew the reconquest of the PI wasn't required. Even
Mac. None of the reasons had anything to do with beating the Japanese.
They had to do with "obligations" to the PI.
They didn't know if the Bomb
would work or not . . .
And if it hadn't the invasion of the PI would have looked even more
foolish in retrospect.
