That's the one. As late as 1964, he was still on active service. In
retrospect, he wasn't that old then, but then my last CO, 1965, had been a
21 year old dive bomber pilot in 1944, and seemed immeasurably old at 42.

Oh, to be 42 again. Kretschmer must have been 50 or a little more in '64.

I saw him sometime in the seventies - and he still looked remarkably
young and smooth-faced. It was a couple of years after he retired so
I guess he must have been in his sixties then. Gave an excellent talk
- his English was quite good - with a lot of sly humour thrown in.
Came across as a very modest sort of man.
