I ended up in a bar, some years after the conflict, with a few
officers of the Argentinian navy and although they never actually said
so, one got the impression that they were as surprised (and possibly
as much caught trousers down) as the RN had been about the war.
Of course one does not get the whole picture from a bunch of junior
officers (as they probably had been at the time) but one got the
impression that right up to the last moment when the bullets started
flying they were firmly convinced they would not have to fight. Or
perhaps they just fervently hoped so.
My experience of Royal Navy officers at the time was that the 'thought
sequence' went something like:
1. Bloody hell, what was all that noise...
2. Bloody hell, we'd better hurry up.
3. Bloody hell, we're going to win.
4. Bloody hell, we won. We must be doing something right.
Remember this this was a time when the new technological navy was
considering spending a lot more time tied up in port while the crews
practiced fighting the 'Red Banner Northern Fleet' on a set of expensive
simulators.
After the Falklands War the Royal Navy decided that what they did worked and
that the idea of training on the ship was still valid.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Barbeques on fire by the chalets past the castle headland
I watched the gift shops glitter in the darkness off the Newborough gate
All these moments will be lost in time, like icecream on the beach
Time for tea.
