AND, one of my employees told me of the child toys from China that
contain lead paint.
The singular of data is not anecdote...

There was an interesting article in one of the glossy weekend magazines
t'other week - I can't cite date or publisher -. The article was
more-or-less; a (couple) of days in the life of $Somebody. He was a
middle-man between a pound-shop retailer and (Chinese) manufacturers. He
visited (at his own expense) trade fairs in mainland china contacting
vendors and organising purchases off them. With a target price of one-pound
retail (including VAT) the margins were extremely tight. The manufacturer
received something like 9.999p per item , the items were sold by the
container load (ISO multi--mode) and were paid -on the barrel- dockside at
named port -[naval content] , The middle-man paid for loading on-board,
insurance and sea borne freight to a English container then received his
payment when trucked to the vendor's warehouse. IIRC; he received something
in the region of 2.00001 pence per item but had borne all the risk for about
a month. The chancellor got 17.5p per item (sold) while the vendor had to
pay rent, insurances, wages etc from the remainder. The article ended with
$Somebody facing another long-haul flight to China , several days of
visiting trade fairs; negotiations with vendors and sleeping in low-rent
hotels .... all to keep the shelves filled with low-cost goodies.
