Frequently the WORST place to be when a storm comes ashore is in port.
We used to routinely 'flush' the ships whenever a big storm could
potentially come ashore. It's much easier to ride out a hurricane
when you've got sea room to maneuver so as to take the seas from a
decent direction.
Been there. Done that.
