Text books, possibly weighing a couple of pounds, and pens can be thrown
whilst seated. However people do need training to think of stationary

OTOH.. How many people actually have books out of the bag in a lecture (A small group seminar maybe, but if you're mostly taking notes... )

And of course.. How far can the average person throw your average A4 x an inch or two thick text book? And with what force?

And of course, the big problem is surprise and the immediate "take cover" reflex.

Getting up to throw something makes you a target. Throwing while seated makes for reduced performance.

As for stationary.. How many pens etc does a person have?
