Now it is fairly easy to fake the symptoms of PTSD - and get cash for
it. I also recognise that some people truly do suffer horribly. I've
known a couple. I have a pal who developed a horrendous stutter after
a firefight in which he was obliged to shoot some men at virtually
point blank range. (He also has horrendous nightmares.) And the
incident was 20 years ago. But I also know of some fakers - and not
only that, they admit they faked it to get money. It rather degrades
the true sufferers and may even be detrimental to them in the long
run.
Where and how do people get money for PTSD? Is it by way of being pensioned
off of service?
That and medical pension, at least here, is better than ordinary. So
if you get boarded (or invalided) you score about on average 40% more
than you normally would have. If you lose both legs, for instance,
you would be on full pay with increases for the rest of your life.
Plus extras for tin legs, wheelchairs etc. However they don't pay out
that well for psychological problems. Another thing that also pisses
me off is that quite often the guys with real and obvious lifetime
psychological problems just quietly resign and go. A few end up on
rooftops with high powered rifles but most quietly go off into corners
and live out their lives coping as best they can. We have a
delightful term out this neck of the woods for PTSD people - we call
them "bossies". Now basically "bos" is Afrikaans for "bush". And the
longer a man spent in the bush during the war the more likely he was
to develop strange and peculiar habits. So you could be slightly, but
not certifiably, bossies or a raving incarcerated-for-life-type of
bossies. With many shades inbetween.
Some nice stories here by Barry Fowler if you care to wade through
them:
