I can't wait to read about the rest of his stellar career to see if he
eventually suffers from PTSD ...;)

PTSD didn't exist till people found out one could claim cash from the
state for it ....

So, no one became mentally ill or incapacitated from the horrors of battle
then? Did they call it "shell shock" in those times?

Also, about Admiral Byng. Was he justly executed? Or was he just a
scapegoat. Enquirying minds and all that ...

Plenty of interpretations abound. Ultimately he was given a job to
do, not given the right tools or support to do it, was mentally
defeated before he started and then failed to deliver what his
political masters thought he should. Some say it was to cover up the
incompetence of those same masters that he could not be allowed to
live. The facts are plain - the machinations depend on one's
viewpoint. It is interesting that William Pitt, Voltaire, Richelieu,
etc. and the admirals of the court martial all asked for clemency.
But it seemed that if he was allowed to live he would have taken down
a number of politicians - like the Duke of Newcastle so he had to
bumped off.

Wow. Have there been any contemporary Byng- like counterparts? Just
curious ......

If you are speaking of tragic characters, my first one would be the captain
of the USS Indianapolis. Initially he was blamed for the sinking, but later
his name was cleared.

He committed suicide.
