Automated Secure Vessel Tracking System exists, this administration
has a leaning towards using private contractors yet
'Generally our maritime traffic control system is where the aviation
industry was in the 1920s and 1930s," Dana A. Goward, the Coast
Guard's director for maritime domain awareness said. "We think we are
making progress, but the nation needs to do better. We are confident
we are getting better all the time."
I watched a news segment the other night about the Coast Guard and their war
on drugs. They showed simulated practices of special helicopters chasing
down drugrunners in boats. The Coast Guard spokesman was sure that they
could get a good handle on the war on drugs if they had more helos available
to them. They said that most of the time their birds are used for
anti-terrorism activities.
