and chairs.

You're wrong. Either that or these bookstores (Borders, etc) are not
'reputable' to your mind.

Since they rarely carry anything I care to buy..
Most of thier stock is mass market crap, IMHO

So why so many and so comfortable? How long does it take to 'browse'
a book?

They are usually busy stores. When I've been in one I have not noticed
people sitting about for any length of time.
