"Manchurian Candidate" (1962) starring Frank Sinatra. It's on today.
Has
anybody seen it? Is it good?
Don't miss it - but that's only my opinion. Years since I last saw it
but it is an excellent black comedy. Part horror, part hilarious.
Going off on at a tangent for a moment - although Frank gives a
brilliant performance I always think he was somewhat miscast. My
opinion again.

Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell.
He was always miscast, there are very few roles for the kind of person
he was. But he sold movies. The costume party is one original twist.
I always think his portrayal of the Jewish son/playboy in "Come blow
your horn" was his best role - but I haven't seen that one for a long
time either.
But you are right about the miscasting - he never quite seemed to
"fit" into his roles - always something of an actor not becoming the
character, about him.
His earliest stuff, and it was stuff, played on him being the frail
boy singer every woman wanted to take home with her. The endless
string of sailor movies, Kissing bandit, Take me out to the ball game,
etc. made Man with The Golden Arm (1955) a jolt that cut him off from
those trivial parts and made him a star. Stars sell movies, so even
playing a French attorney in Can-Can, a real stretch for anyone,
didn't kill him at the box office.
I think he was best as Nathan Detroit in "Guys and Dolls" but then he was
really portraying someone whom he knew, perhaps even himself.

I might suggest he was playing his version of this character, the
original Nathan Detroit was Sam Levene, sort of an earlier version of
Sheldon Leonard. One description of Levene says he made a career out
of playing side of the mouth types.
