Many years ago, myself and 6 equally crazy matelots, were sent to
reactivate an old WW2 10cm radar station that had last worked in 1949.
This was one of those crazy exercises the navy does when the ship is
in drydock and they have superfluous sailors sculling about with
nothing to do but relieve the local ladies of the burden of their
virginity, drink and get into pub fights. So off we went - I think we
were given two weeks to do the job. I got into the generator house,
cranked the three Lister-Blackstone 6 cyclinder diesels and away they
roared. The sparkie threw the switches and there was power on the
board. The radar techie threw his switches and away the old scanner
went. Beautiful. We now had 2 weeks minus a morning to kill. This
place, high on a mountain top, was pretty isolated - for that it was
slap bang in a city. Took 25 minutes with a 4wd to get there. Every
day someone would take the Bedford down into town, buy two six-man
cans of Witzenberg Edelgoud (a cheap and nasty vin very ordinaire)
some meat and some putu and we would sup on this. There were three
Basuto caretakers living up there and we would get them to make the
putu as only they knew how while we "barbecued" (braaied) the njama.
Then we would all eat and finish off the cans of wine. Next morning
we would sober up until it was time to go and buy the next load.
