1) Tora, Tora, Tora (Pearl Harbor could've been this if Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay had

2) Sink the Bismarck (any suggestions as to who could do the old Johnny Horton song?)

3) Run Silent, Run Deep (hasn't been a good WW II sub movie since Das Boot)

4) Midway (no need for combat footage with SB2Cs, TBMs, and F6Fs when CGI can give
you Wildcats, Dauntlessess, and Devastators)

I find that the vast majority of remakes suck - the directors gets so
immersed in technical details and gee-whizzery they lose the story.

I'd love to see "Sink the Bismarck" again - I was fresh out of
three-cornered trousers when I saw it last. Probably a good laugh,
chock full of bombastic acting and stiff-upper lipness! I wasn't that
impressed with Tora, Tora, Tora or Midway first time round anyway.
Never seen Run Silent, Run Deep - but I don't know if I'd want to.
The book is one of my favourites. I know the movie is rated as one of
the "greats" but I don't really like the idea of Burt Lancaster and
Clark Gable as sub officers. I see the book not as an "actioner" so
much as a study of the psychological atmosphere of a sub at war.
One reads it and knows that the author has been there - and as a whole
person, not as a caricature.
