Although the headline to Lewis's piece calls Cameron's expedition "Bogus,"
it doesn't actually challenge Cameron's conclusion that Bismarck was
scuttled. Lewis is heavy on dismissive rhetoric but light on analysis.
Lewis observes that the notion it was the British who sent Bismarck to the
bottom was a point of national pride for 50 years, a slave for the
humiliation of having had the former Queen of the oceans, Hood, destroyed in
her battle with Bismarck with the loss of all on board but three. Indeed,
this seems to be the reason for the dismissive tone of Lewis's piece. But
the time is long past for substituting national pride for scientific
analysis, it seems to me.
The plain fact is that the Bismarck was shot to rags on the 27th of
May, 1941. The shell fire was at such close range at the end that the
damage was all above the waterline. The scuttling charges set by the
Bismarck's crew just hastened the end. If left to nature the hulk
would have sunk anyway.
Somebody else made the same point earlier in the thread and I agree with the
conclusion. Bismarck was doomed before her crew scuttled her. By that time
she could no longer either run or fight.
escape from her tormenters.
