Lewis observes that the notion it was the British who sent Bismarck to thein
bottom was a point of national pride for 50 years, a slave for the
humiliation of having had the former Queen of the oceans, Hood, destroyed
her battle with Bismarck with the loss of all on board but three. Indeed,
this seems to be the reason for the dismissive tone of Lewis's piece. But
the time is long past for substituting national pride for scientific
analysis, it seems to me.
Since she would not have been scuttled if not for the state she was in as a
result of the activities of the RN, who cares if they pulled the plug and
let more water in the plug-hole than was coming in the other holes.?
