delayed only slightly by Eugene's and Jim's misspellings of
paraffin:
"Chiefly British. Kerosene."

Yep. By the ghods that was, indeed, a paraffin budgie pictured

Some difference are also between N and S Italy; Once in Albenga, Savona Province, Liguria, Northern Italy, I and friends of mine (in late '80s, when was not much fuss here about smoking) at a restaurant we ask for a "ceneriera" (ashtray, in Southern Italy), and the waiters, then the restaurant's owner was at loss, not understanding, until another patron at and adjacent table explain that we asked for a "posacenere" (ashtray, in Northern Italy)
