According to the Jerusalem Post, the ship struck by the ASM was
one of the three Sa'ar 5 ships built at Ingalls in the 1990s.

I understood that these ships were quite capable as AAW ships,
fitted with both a 20-mm CIWS system and the
indigenously-designed BARAK SAM system.

It's my understanding that the Sa'ar-5's can have EITHER the
Phalanx OR a Oto 76mm cannon, and since Hanit was shelling targets
in Labanon, they probably did not have the Phalanx system.

Hmm. The Haze gray page said they were all uprated with that
armament, but you may be right.

Barak should have been able to counter the C-802,though.

Was someone--the ship's commanding and/or tactical warfare
officer--asleep at the switch when the C-802 ASM got past all the
AAW defenses and slammed into the ship?

M.S.

IMO,Israel just did not expect effective anti-ship missiles from
Hezbollah.

Maybe, given the past... could it also be possible that they might
have hit is on the way in, but either not stopped it or taken
shrapnel/blast damage from a close explosion?

The released photos show that Hanit had the Phalanx mount, rather than
the OTO Melara 76mm. The official story also says that not only was
the Phalanx shut down, but the Barak missile system as well. (Seems
dumb to me, but what do I know?)

How was Hanit SHELLING Lebanese targets, then;if no 76mm gun?
I doubt they were launching Harpoons at land targets.
(overlarge warhead for the task, and Expensive.)

It seems that YANIT and her sisters are equiped with either a CIWS or a 76mm
OTO in interchangeable container mountings. Previous pictures may show the
CIWS, but has anyone seen pictures taken during this sortie or after the
impact ?
