you'd have to replace the power turbine with an entirely new
assembly. That would be a pretty expensive retrofit for just a couple
knots of speed, and so not worth doing.

It may sound like an apples v oranges comparison, but I have been told
by people who served on the SPRUANCES that a defective LM2500 module
could be swapped out in 72 hours.

I've seen the modules myself on DDs, and IIRC, they're not much bigger
than a pickup truck; the majority of the work is getting the exhaust
piping disassembled in order to permit a crane to lift the module out
of the exhaust trunk.

Assuming a more poweful module could be "dropped in" in lieu of the original, and the rest of the powertrain could actually utilize the
extra load, and the controls make sense of the new powerplant is an
entirely separate set of issues.

that's basically true, though they go in/out the intake, not the exhaust. But the controls, IIRC except for maybe a couple trimmer pots that set the PT overspeed trips the rest of the control law logic was pretty much hard-coded into hardware.

That's correct. You could certainly set the limits higher electronically, but the engine itself would have to be up to the task. You'd have to have an entirely different PT section to use higher limits, and the payoff in speed just isn't worth the design/test/construction costs. Better to use that money on a new platform.
