You're living in the stone age, Jack. Destroyer COs have been
fighting their ships from CIC since the Seventies. Rarely, if ever,
is anything visual going to happen in modern warfare with the possible
exception of countering small boat attacks. If rudder orders are
necessary, the skipper will call the bridge from CIC.

To paraphrase Bob Dylan, even the weatherman needs to look out the
window to see what's happening. You can't have it both ways. Stone Age
is when we had a naval enemy, today we have to seek out some frail
piece of floating rust in order to exercise, and can stay inside and
play it like a video game.

A real situation I saw enacted involved three Soviet ships and a DER.
The DER skipper was very aggressive and did what some might call
provacative manuevers. At one point one of the Soviet ships decided to
back down, hampering the calculation of who would be where. At this
point the engine room announced that they had enough air (compressed)
for one more engine start. Not the time to be blind in a box trying to
decide if a green blob was moving this way or that way. Not combat but
I couldn't tell the difference at the time.

If you are speaking modern conventional naval warfare, the enemy is probably one or two hundred miles away, so the view form the CIC would be much better than that from the bridge. ...
