You captured it better than I could have. The key point is that
astonishing levels of noise don't wake you up, if they are routine,
but the softest whisper ("Arved...<ARVED>...there's f""king ***
moving over yonder") does. There are in fact specialized forms of
whisper - none differ in volume, but they vary in frequency and
duration...every one of which communicates its own signal from a
urgent "Get the f**k up because we are being assaulted and we are
firing an FPF" to a tactical "get up because it's your turn to take
watch".
Th thing that used to wake me up on a boat was the lack of noise, once the
fans stopped I was awake. Normal operations I could sleep through anything
( and often did ! ) but stop the fans and i was up and running.
