An article published in the May 2004 issue of the Navy League's Sea
Power Magazine says the USS Pinckney DDG-91 is the first Aegis ship
that can transmit beams from two SPY-1 arrays at the same time.

"One of the most significant improvements is in the computer program.
For example, "dual-beaming" is a new feature that nearly doubles the
rate at which sailors can search the combat air space; it involves two
opposing array faces simultaneously sending out and processing pulses.
Previous generations of SPY-1 radars could only transmit from one array
face at a time."

Anybody know why four faces cannot transmit simultaneously? Is it
because of the limitation in the computer program as implied in the
article or the four arrays share a common transmitter?
Just a thought but those radars puts out millions of watts of power
right? So maybe a ship regardless of how many transmitters they have
can't provide enough juice to power more than one or two radars at a
time at full power. Makes you wonder though that if this is not some
disinformation how the AEGIS ships would have dealt with a massed Bear
bomber high speed cruise missile attack against them/carrier(s)
launching from a circular arc outside SAM range if not destroyed by
fighters. I suspose they could rapidily shift which radar was radiating
to take advantage of all radars or divide the threats into sections and
task ships to cover northeast, northwest, southwest, southeast etc...

It's an interesting point about total power. When Typhon was being
developed, it was expected that the duty cycle of the RADAR would affect
ship's range. Does anyone have any idea if operating SPY-1 affects fuel
consumption enough to matter?
