Obsolete and antiquated ships

Just some random thoughts...
While reading the Yamato thread and perception of battleships being the
traditional juggernauts of the oceans I just realised how really slow
the warship development has been going on since Second World War. When
one is reading various WW I or WW II accounts you run constantly into
accounts of "antiquated HMS Good Hope in Battle of Coronel" or
"trusted, but obsolete County-class cruisers" it is sometimes hard to
remember that ships described might have been just fifteen years old.
Meanwhile, USS Enterprise, for example, is scheduled to be
decommissioned in 2013, after 52 years of service, and I guess that is
more due to growing maintenance costs than being totally unsuited for
modern combat. What we are seeing now is something like during days of
SOL's when best built ships remained in active service for some 50-60
years.
