I've seen, but can't find, a moderately detailed explanation of what
happened...from memory, typical Soviet maintenance failure lead to a
fire in one bunker which then propagated to n (many) other bunkers.
Eventually taking out some 2/3 of the Northern Fleet ready munitions.
100 sq miles(?) went up.
