Sandra Jontz / S&S Chief Petty Officer Aaron Caples rings the ?Chief?s
Bell? last September after being pinned with the coveted golden
anchors. The bell-ringing tradition will continue as the Navy prepares
to require attendance of a CPO Academy for newly selected chief petty
officers.
For the first time in the rank?s more than 100 years, newly selected
chief petty officers will be going to school.
A formalized, structured, no-kidding-sitting-in-a-classroom school.
And fellow sailors worldwide will be watching to see whether the
Navy?s first-ever CPO Academy, to be held in Europe, makes the grade.
Change is hard, Navy leaders acknowledge, and some current chiefs have
bristled at the thought of a program that would alter one of the most
sacred and coveted Navy traditions.
But Master Chief Petty Officer Anthony Evangelista, fleet master chief
for U.S. Naval Forces Europe/6th Fleet, said, ?Absent this, there?s no
structure? to the transforming of enlisted sailors into naval leaders.
?That?s the key point ? No one does anything universally. Everyone
kind of builds the bridge as they?re crossing it, and we can?t do that
anymore.?
