There is a famous photo, reproduced ad-nauseum, of the USS Monitor. Looking
at the turret, there are two guns, greatly mismatched in size. The
story/spec. of the Monitor is that it had 2 11-inch guns.
What is the story of the mismatched guns? Did one blow up?
To my knowledge, there are no photos of the USS Monitor showing both
guns run out. There are a number showing the deck and turret of the
Monitor with one gun run out, but none with both guns visible. In all
of the photos, the deck and turret are painted a uniform shade of
gray.
I believe the photo you are referring to is one of the turret of USS
Catskill, another single-turret monitor. It has the turret painted a
lighter color than the deck, with a band of deck color around the top
and bottom of the turret. The Catskill had two dissimilar guns, one
an 11" and the other a 15"; the muzzle of the 15" gun would not pass
through the gun port. Another visible difference from the Monitor is
the presence of a tubular iron structure on top of the turret.
