Shades of William Rufus in New Forest in Anno Domini 1100 -- but with far
less sanguinary results.

Lesson Learned:

Don't try to sneak up on Vice President Dick Cheney.

Yeah, how long would it have taken to report this if Cheney killed him?

What stuck out to me though is that the owner of the property on which
the incident occurred was the person interviewed by the AP. And the
property owner, Katharine Armstrong, gave a highly exculpatory
recounting of what transpired. Basically, she said the victim, Harry
Whittington, snuck up on Cheney, didn't give the appropriate warning.
And in any case getting sprayed with shot in the face and half your
body isn't that big a deal anyway.

We find that Armstrong is the daughter of the one of the folks who
hired Cheney at Halliburton.

And of course it took more than 24 hours for the incident to be
reported to the press.

Well, lets get realistic here.

It appears Cheney accidently injured a close friend, who is also a person close to the Armstrong household. It would be reasonable to expect the people involved to focus on getting medical attention for the injured party and worry about notifications later. As I understand, the police were notified rather quickly, but due to a snafu, the Secret Service kept his deputies out.

One thing, though, after learning how Cheney's group runs its shooting parties, I would not hunt with him. One should never shoot in any direction that might lead to another member of the party. Common practice in Texas is to arrange the party in a circle, facing out, and to never shoot inside the circle. When hunting doves or quail, discipline is essential.

Good thing he wasn't hunting deer.
